I’ve been through many seasons of creative funks. Ones where I could not even think of what to film or say, and ones that just made me downright lazy. Since 2014 I’ve been growing my Youtube Channel, named after Yours Truly, formerly called initial focus.

Each time I entered a funk it took me weeks to claw my way out. My funks were very much along the lines of those many others suffer from. I would sleep in, barely get any fresh air, let text messages and phone calls go unanswered and eat poorly.

Absolutely every funk I’ve experienced has begun with the same thing, a lack of inspiration to create. Since I was a kid all I wanted to do was make movies. There was nothing else on my mind and there was zero pressure for me to be doing anything else. But now, with a family and bills to pay, I found myself doing all my tasks in survival mode and loathing the very thing that made my life feel so meaningful early on.

I needed some time away, to reconnect with myself and my creativity. So I booked a flight to Vancouver for a solo trip.

This was NOT going to be a trip where I relaxed and watched Netflix all day. In order to get out of my creative rut I needed to remind myself of what I loved most about filming and allow myself the freedom to do what felt right.

I also knew that I needed to push myself WAY past my comfort zone in a way that really shook me and made me open my eyes to life. I was letting my fear get the best of me in every day life and so I planned to go skydiving, the ONE activity I always swore I would never do because of my fear of heights.

Here’s the full video of that trip and what I learned:

I could not have gotten out of my creative funk if I had not:

1- Recognized the bad habits that put me there

2- Taken myself out of my typical routine and experienced something fresh

3- Listened to my gut instead of my head (so I would stop overthinking)

I hope this helps you on your journey, and thank you so much for reading until the end!
