Organizing camera gear is something every creative does differently. I think there are two forms of organizing gear. One for at home/studio and one for on location. I’ll walk you through exactly how I set up my camera gear for both scenarios.

Organizing At Home

At home I like to keep my main YouTube setup built out. This means my Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro is always setup on a tripod with the 21mm IRIX Cine lens attached and OSEE 15” Megamon monitor in front. I keep batteries all charged in a charging station nearby, Although I have learned the benefits of using AC/DC cables for gear I run in my studio. I can have my cameras, monitors, sound on all day without needing to grab batteries. Its takes more planning and work to hide and run cables around the room but its worth the time to organize. Now I can go downstairs and within 2-3minutes be recording.

Organizing on a Shoot

On the go I utilize my Peter Mckinnon X Nomatic 35L Backpack. This is by far the best backpack for people who need to fit 1-2 camera bodies, cine lenses, batteries and accessories. Oh it also fits both my 16” MacBook Pro and 12.9” iPad Pro at the same time all while remaining carry on sized when I fly, fitting into a the overhead compartment or under the seat. I like to organize my bag into sections with lenses, batteries, memory cards and cables all with each other so at a glance I know where something should be grouped. I’ve been organizing my personal bags for years so after some time you create a workflow where you know where everything goes.

Why keep your camera gear organized?

Keeping your camera gear organized can be super beneficial for photographers and videographers alike. Here are some advantages of maintaining a well-organized camera kit:

1. Efficient Workflow: An organized camera bag or storage system ensures that you can quickly locate the gear you need. By having each item assigned its specific place, you save valuable time during shoots, preventing delays and allowing you to focus more on capturing the perfect shots.

2. Protection and Longevity: Proper organization safeguards your camera gear from potential damage. When your lenses, cameras, and accessories are stored securely in designated compartments, they are less likely to be subjected to accidental bumps, scratches, or exposure to harmful elements. This extends the lifespan of your equipment, preventing costly repairs or replacements.

3. Ease of Transportation: When your camera gear is organized, it becomes easier to transport. Whether you are traveling to a remote location, going on a shoot, or simply moving equipment from one place to another, an organized kit allows for efficient packing and minimizes the risk of leaving anything behind. This convenience is particularly crucial for professionals who frequently work on location.

4. Reduced Stress and Overwhelm: Searching through a chaotic mess of equipment can be frustrating and increase stress levels. By keeping your camera gear organized, you eliminate the anxiety of trying to locate specific items when time is limited or the pressure is high. With everything in its place, you gain a sense of control and confidence, enabling you to focus on capturing exceptional images.

5. Creativity Enhancement: An organized camera gear setup fosters a creative mindset. When you know exactly where each piece of equipment is located, you can easily experiment with different lenses, filters, or accessories, allowing you to push your creative boundaries. By eliminating clutter and having easy access to your tools, you can unleash your artistic vision without any distractions.

6. Inventory and Maintenance: Consistently keeping your gear organized enables you to have a clear inventory of your equipment, ensuring that nothing goes missing or gets overlooked. This makes it easier to track and maintain your gear, keeping lenses clean, batteries charged, and accessories up to date. Proper maintenance not only improves performance but also contributes to the longevity of your equipment.

Never underestimate the benefits of having an organized set up. It will help create a smooth work flow 100% of the time!
