Two years after the initial announcement, today DJI has finally released the 8K version of the Ronin 4D cinema camera. I had the opportunity to check out the new sensor for the past month and I used it in a variety of scenarios.

To me the 4D has always been the most versatile camera. Quick setup and tear down. Transition from a handheld look to super smooth gimbal operation at the flick of a switch. LiDAR auto focus and active track technology, it truly is a great example of what the best of all worlds in one camera can be.

Of course that’s not to say it’s the perfect camera. Heavy cinema lenses will not balance making gimbal operation only available to lighter weighted lenses. The new 8K full frame sensor is also a data hog. The 1TB Pro SSD gives you about 30-40min of record time on the highest resolution and frame rate option 8K 75fps ProRes RAW.

Speaking of codecs, the 8K only offers 3 with no plans to add anymore. ProRes RAW, ProRes HQ and H.264. If you’re a DaVinci Resolve user, be aware that ProRes RAW is not currently supported and you’ll need to roundtrip as I briefly show in my video.

To learn how to edit in DaVinci Resolve, join our course today! It has helped hundreds of people learn the ins and outs of this editing software and there is also a section on the iPad version!

Having access to 8K 60fps no crop and 4K 120fps no crop is something that 2 years ago I couldn’t have dreamed of.
