Filmic Pro is Dead

The parent company that bought Filmic Pro last year, Bending Spoons, fired the entire staff this morning.

I have had the privilege to work with some really cool people on the Filmic team for years now so it was devastating to hear this news.

With stand out features like the Filmic Remote that allowed you to use a secondary device as a monitor, Filmic Pro seemed to have their consumers best interest at heart and they were also the first to offer ProRes on the iPhone 13 Pro which back in 2021 was a serious step forward in mobile filmmaking.

Filmic Pro was the leading video app for filmmakers for the past decade but there were two things that probably led them here.

1- Earlier this year, their pricing structure changed to a subscription model with their V7 update. Consumers found it difficult to stomach when they made the move to a weekly/monthly subscription.

2- Blackmagic released a much more feature-rich app for FREE during the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro.

It’s unclear what Bending Spoons has in mind for the future of Filmic Pro but my heart goes out to the whole team. Especially my contact Eliot, who shares a mutual passion for mobile filmmaking tech. To support Eliot, buy his iPhone 15 Pro LUT!
